More than 20 people have been injured when a suspension bridge collapsed over a river in the western Indian state of Gujarat, according to the first assessment by the authorities.
The suspension bridge at Morbi, over the Machchhu River, was a historic structure that was restored and reopened to the public just four days ago to celebrate the Gujarati New Year.
The provisional casualty figure has been confirmed by the inspector general of the nearby town of Rajot, Ashok Yadav, to the ‘Times of India’ newspaper.
According to witnesses, there were several women and children on the suspension bridge when it broke.
