UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has warned Russia that there will be «serious consequences» to a hypothetical use of nuclear weapons in the framework of the war in Ukraine, now in its ninth month of activity.
«I should make clear that for the UK and our allies, any use of nuclear weapons would fundamentally change the nature of this conflict. There would be serious consequences for Russia,» Cleverly said.
The British diplomat also expressed his disagreement with the «absurd» remarks made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Ukraine was planning to detonate a «dirty bomb» on its own territory in order to accuse Moscow.
«No other country is talking about using nuclear weaponry. No country is threatening Russia or President Putin,» added Cleverly, who believes that the Russian leader is somehow «exacting revenge» for his military failures in Ukraine, according to BBC.
Similarly, Cleverly has spoken out on the Ukrainian grain supply pact, from which Russia has disassociated itself in recent hours. «I urge Russia to stop obstructing this vital initiative,» he said.
