At least two police officers have been killed during a night of violence in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil in which up to seven attacks with explosive devices have been reported.
The Ecuadorian Police has confirmed on its social networks the death of the two agents in what it has called a «cowardly act». Likewise, the body has confirmed the beginning of the relevant investigations to find those responsible.
On the other hand, security authorities have also reported a total of seven explosives emergencies, at least four of them involving National Police officers.
According to the newspaper ‘El Comercio’, all the incidents have been recorded in the northern area of the city, where several days ago several criminal groups threatened to attack the police.
In addition, a car bomb has been detonated at the Pascuales bus station, in the northern end of the city, and two other devices have exploded at gas stations.
According to data provided by the Ecuadorian authorities, the province of Guayas, where Guayaquil is located, concentrates 62 percent of the explosive attacks registered in the country.
This wave of nighttime violence occurred just one day after rumors surfaced about the possible transfer of prisoners from the Litoral Penitentiary, the scene of several violent episodes in the last year in which dozens of inmates have died.
