Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused Western media during a conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Hosein Amirabdolahian, of launching an international campaign to increase tensions in the Gulf region.
«In the conditions of a difficult international situation, it can turn into a dangerous escalation of tension in this strategically important area of the world,» Lavrov has said, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement.
The United States expressed concern on Tuesday about a possible «imminent» attack by Iran against targets in Saudi Arabia, senior Saudi and U.S. officials explained, as reported by ‘The Wall Street Journal’.
In response to this warning by the intelligence services of both countries, Saudi Arabia, the United States and several neighboring states raised the alert level of their military forces, according to the newspaper.
Concerns about a possible attack on Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, come after the Biden Administration criticized Tehran both for cracking down on protests following the death of young Mahsa Amini and for allegedly sending drones to Russia in the framework of the war in Ukraine.
