Thousands of people took part in a demonstration on Saturday to demand the calling of early elections and to protest against the rising cost of living.
Unions and social organizations united in the coordinating Popular Assembly have called the march «United Kingdom is broken» that has traveled under the rain the distance between the Victoria Embankment and Trafalgar Square, where several speakers have intervened as the general secretary of the Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMT), Mick Lynch, reports The Press Association agency.
The organizers advocate the immediate calling of elections, measures against low wages and the repeal of the laws they consider to be directed against the unions.
One of the attendees, Adam Robinson, has assured that the people «will continue shouting» until the government listens and has compared these protests with the revolts against the single tax introduced by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1990.
«I’m starting to feel a pinch and I know a lot of people are feeling it too,» said Robinson, a 51-year-old secondary school teacher in Maidstone, Kent.
«This government is a total disaster. It’s not good at what it needs to do and it’s hurting our country. I think it’s important that we stand up together to make our voice heard and say we’re not going to put up with this,» he has argued.
From the stage, Lynch has vowed to strike «again and again and again» until a «fair deal» is reached for rail workers.
Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn also took part, assuring that the government «in the end will have to listen» to the demands for wage increases and the defense of labor rights.
«People are very determined. They are not going to consent to discrimination against people with disabilities. They are not going to see an increasing impoverishment of our society,» he stressed.
