UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that in his speech at the UN climate summit on Monday he will emphasize the importance of moving «further and faster» towards the transition to renewable energy and that he will ensure that the UK is at the forefront of this process as a «clean energy superpower».

Sunak made the statement on Saturday before leaving for Egypt on Sunday, where COP27 will take place, after changing his mind and deciding to attend the international meeting earlier in the week.

This Saturday he stressed that the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the «despicable» manipulation of energy prices have reinforced the importance of ending dependence on fossil fuels.

«When the world met in Glasgow last year, nations agreed on a historic roadmap to prevent catastrophic global warming. It is more important than ever that we deliver on those promises,» he said, as reported by the BBC.

He also stressed that the fight against climate change is not only a moral good, but is fundamental for «future prosperity and security».

The premier decided to attend the summit after receiving criticism from climate activists, opposition parties and the president of COP26, the previous edition, Alok Sharma. However, King Charles III will not attend the event as he had agreed with the former head of government, Liz Truss.
