Ukraine believes Republicans will maintain economic aid to deal with Russia

Ukraine believes that the United States will maintain economic aid to its country in the framework of the invasion of Russia in the event that the Republicans take control of the legislative branch after the midterm elections.

Ukrainian Economy Minister Julia Sviridenko said Tuesday that Washington’s financial support to Kiev will not decrease, despite threats by some party members to examine spending more closely.

«We really appreciate their bipartisan support,» the economy minister said in an interview with Bloomberg news agency.

«We are not worried. Ukraine is fighting for very specific rights and values. I believe that the United States will support until we achieve victory.»

Also, Sviridenko — who is visiting Washington — has again appealed to allies to send more weapons and funding. His request includes air defense systems to deal with suspected Iranian drones and Russian missiles.

The U.S. mid-term elections could hamper the Biden Administration’s policy agenda, as Republicans are expected to take control of the House of Representatives, and could gain a majority in the Senate. In the event that the Democrats lose both chambers, Biden would have a hard time getting his presidential promises passed.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, who is in position to become House speaker, warned last month that his party would not write a «blank check» to Ukraine if it wins a majority in Tuesday’s elections. President Joe Biden also said in October that he is «concerned» that Republicans would cut aid to Ukraine if they win.
