U.S. President Joe Biden said Thursday that the Democratic Party is «very likely» to maintain control of the House of Representatives as the midterm vote count continues.
Asked about the possibility of his party gaining power in the Lower House, Biden said, according to a White House press release, that it is still possible, especially after they have closed the gap with the Republican Party in the last hours.
«He is still alive. It’s still alive. But it’s like drawing an inside straight,» said the U.S. president in a huddle with journalists minutes before leaving for Egypt to attend the COP27 climate summit.
However, Biden confessed to having spoken with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, whom he congratulated in the event that the Republicans finally win control of the lower house.
The race for the 218-seat majority in the House of Representatives is currently being won by the Republican Party with 211 seats. Meanwhile, the Democrats have 198 seats, although a flip in the results is still possible.
Most of the states still to be counted are traditionally Democratic, such as California, New Mexico or Washington, so the seats still at stake could swing the majority to Biden’s party.
