The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, confirmed during the meeting of the Permanent Council held this Friday that he had a three-year relationship with an official, for which an external investigation will be initiated for allegedly violating the code of ethics.

«I want to confirm something, practically everyone knew about the relationship, that relationship existed, I went to diplomatic dinners where many of you were accompanied by her, she was my partner for three years on a personal level, perhaps the best of my life. Our relationship ended months ago», he said.

He has also thanked on several occasions that the OAS wants to opt for an external investigation with all the guarantees and has highlighted his role in favoring that this can be given with the best results. «We have accompanied all the proposals in order to provide transparency and with the vision that we should give the best results as a result of these investigations,» he said.

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) has approved this Friday a resolution for an external company to investigate the accusations against Almagro, for «alleged misconduct».

The draft resolution, dated November 9, sponsored by Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru -it was initiated by the missions of Antigua and Barbuda and Uruguay-, contemplated that an external firm investigate the conduct of the Secretary General.

The approval of the resolution, contained on the official OAS website, explains that it will finally be an external firm that will investigate the accusations against Almagro, which were made both by a journalist from The Associated Press and by an anonymous whistleblower through an email to the OAS.

Among the measures established by the organization, the company in question is instructed to «submit within three months a report directly to the Chair of the Permanent Council, who will make it available to the Council without delay».
