At least seven people have died early Saturday morning on Russia’s Sakhalin Island, where gas in a home has generated an explosion that has affected all five floors of a residential building, authorities said.
The governor of the region has explained that among the deceased are three children and that rescue teams are looking for three more residents, on his Telegram channel.
Shortly after the explosion, the authorities reported that a first body had been found under the rubble, as well as that of another survivor who has been taken to the operating room for surgery, as detailed in a message broadcast by the same application.
«The house was not connected to the centralized gas supply infrastructure. The causes of the explosion are now being established. 10 emergency vehicles and 30 rescuers are working at the site,» he wrote, after which he reported that a medical plane and a rescue helicopter were on their way.
In addition, the governor specified that a temporary shelter with beds and hot meals had been set up for the residents affected by the explosion, which damaged the entire building. A total of 33 people were living in the block, he said.
