UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Thursday that whenever there is racism «we must confront it,» in reaction to the Buckingham Palace scandal in which an aide resigned after staging a racist episode.

Sunak, who declined to comment directly on the incident, said he has experienced racism, despite the progress he believes has been made on the issue.

«Our country has made incredible progress in the fight against racism. But the job is never finished. That’s why, every time we see it, we must confront it,» he said in statements to the media.

«The right thing to do is for us to continually learn lessons and move forward to a better future,» the British prime minister added.

The person responsible for the scandal, Lady Susan Hussey, on Wednesday staged an incident in a meeting with the founder of a charity organization to which she repeatedly questioned her place of origin.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement calling the comments «unacceptable and deeply regrettable.» While the person responsible for this racist incident was initially unknown, the British press has subsequently confirmed that it is Lady Susan Hussey, former personal assistant to the late Elizabeth II and godmother of Prince William.

«Racism has no place in our society,» William said through a spokesman. «The comments were unacceptable and it is right that this person has stepped aside with immediate effect,» the statement delved.
