Peruvian authorities confirmed on Sunday the first death during protests against the new government at the airport of Andahuaylas, in the Peruvian region of Apurimac, whose social organizations have declared, as of Monday, a state of popular insurgency to demand the closure of the country’s Congress and the release of former president Pedro Castillo.

«We regret the death of a person and we send our condolences to the bereaved for this event,» said the Peruvian National Police in a statement reported by ‘La República’.

«The police institution calls on citizens to maintain order and calm, aspects that lead to the development of the country and invites the population to make their claims in a peaceful manner,» the note adds.

According to sources at the Andahuaylas hospital, the clashes have already left a dozen people injured, reports Radio Programas del Peru (RPP).

The regional governor of Apurimac, Baltazar Lantarón Núñez, has publicly asked President Boluarte to bring forward the general elections, close the Congress and arrange for the drafting of a new Constitution, less than 24 hours before the beginning of the indefinite popular strike.

According to Andina, peasants in the Peruvian department of Ucayali, in the center-east of the country, also announced that they will hold protests on Monday in favor of the former president.

In Arequipa, groups of miners have blocked accesses in the province of Caravelí, and the Peruvian National Federation of Education Workers (Fenate), founded five years ago by Castillo, has announced a national strike for December 15 to demand new general elections.
