At least four Pakistani policemen have been killed and four others injured in an overnight attack on a police station in the town of Lakki Marwat, located in the volatile Jibber Pakhtunkhwa province near the border with Afghanistan, where the situation is deteriorating rapidly, according to official sources on condition of anonymity.
Pakistani police have begun a search-and-seizure operation after the perpetrators of the attack went on the run, security sources told Pakistan’s GEO TV.
According to sources of ‘The News’, the Police of the entire province is on high alert after recent attacks in Peshawar or Mardan, where numerous political personalities have been threatened, due to groups associated with the Islamic State or the Pakistani Taliban.
The latter group, which differs from the Afghan Taliban in organizational matters but follows the same rigorist interpretation of Sunni Islam, brings together more than a dozen Islamist militant groups operating in Pakistan, where they have killed some 70,000 people in two decades of violence.
According to official estimates, at least 118 «terrorist incidents» have been recorded in the province from mid-August to the last week of November, with at least 26 policemen, 12 other officials and 17 civilians killed in attacks on a dozen localities.
At least 539 suspected terrorists were arrested and 141 were killed during operations against these groups.
