The Chilean National Emergency Office (ONEMI) has decreed a red alert for the commune of Easter Island due to a forest fire that has consumed three hectares inside the Rapa Nui National Park.
The ONEMI has warned of the «rapid spread» of the flames and has warned that «all necessary and available resources will be mobilized, in additional support to that already deployed by CONAF, Firefighters and the National System for Disaster Prevention and Response (SINAPRED)», reports the newspaper ‘El Mercurio’.
Shortly before this announcement, the Undersecretary of the Interior reported that as of 11:30 a.m. on Sunday there were five active fires and 43 extinguished.
