At least ten people have died–including a five-month-old baby–in a fire Sunday in Muntinlupa, on the outskirts of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.
The fire affected a residential building in the Baragay Putatan neighborhood, specifically on Bruger Street, at around 8:52 a.m., the Department of Fire Protection reported, as quoted by ABS-CBN television. The first notice of the fire was received at 9:02 a.m. and was declared under control 20 minutes later.
Fire spokesman Eugene Briones explained that the victims were trapped inside the house and indicated that they were all members of the same family.
Two of them were a couple who had just returned from the United States. Two of their children are dead, as well as five grandchildren and an in-law.
An 86-year-old female member of the same family survived because she had left the house to open the family business. A relative of the victims, Cynthia Esporlas, said that the family was going to celebrate the holidays.
Authorities have already mobilized the Department of Social Services to care for the survivors of this fire. «I have ordered immediate attention to all those affected,» said Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon.
