Ecuador’s National Police have seized 2.3 tons of drugs in the ‘Christmas’ operation at the Port of Guayaquil, in the west of the country, after finding 2,345 packages of cocaine hydrochloride in a container destined for France.
The packages were hidden in a calcium silicate tank and were found thanks to the help of a drug dog. The drug was hidden in 102 packages containing bricks, the Ecuadorian police said in a statement, detailing that this was one of the largest shipments they have captured during 2022.
The case, which is under preliminary investigation, includes the company and the people who transported the shipment, reported ‘El Telegrafo’.
Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso has highlighted the operation of the country’s police, who have more than 26 million doses of cocaine from international markets, with an approximate value of $43 million (40.40 million euros).
«The efficient work of the Police has allowed, during a pre-shipment inspection, to thwart the departure of more than two tons of cocaine that were destined for France. Our work to control, prevent and act against any threat is permanent», said the President in a letter.
During 2022, Ecuadorian authorities have seized more than 195 tons of drugs, mainly destined for the United States and Europe, according to the newspaper.
