A Tunisian court has sentenced to death a man accused of carrying out an attack in July 2018 against a National Guard patrol in the vicinity of Mount Chaambi, located near the border with Algeria.
The convicted man, identified as Jairedin Barhumi, was charged with murder, attempted murder, «provoking chaos» and «attacking the state», among other charges, as reported by Tunisian broadcaster Mosaique FM.
A man identified as Murad Jazri has also been sentenced to 48 years in prison in the same case. Both Barhumi and Jazri will also have to pay 130,000 Tunisian dinars (about 39,220 euros) to a fund for victims of terrorist acts.
Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade, which has sworn allegiance to the Al Qaeda terrorist organization and operates mainly on Mount Chaambi, located in Kasserine province. The group underwent a split after several of its members swore allegiance to the jihadist group Islamic State.
The province has been the scene of numerous anti-terrorist operations, especially in several mountainous areas of the province. Tunisia and Algeria share a porous border that is regularly used by smugglers and has been used in recent months for the infiltration of fighters and weaponry.
