Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has defended the «immediate» measures adopted by her government to control the arrival of travelers from China, but acknowledged that such measures, to be effective, must be adopted in a coordinated manner within the EU.
Meloni has affirmed in a press conference that the Italian authorities are monitoring «minute by minute» the evolution of the situation after the apparent explosion of COVID-19 cases in the Asian giant, which has lifted most of the restrictions in force.
Italy beat the other EU partners to the punch by making it mandatory for all travelers from China to present a negative test. The order, details of which became known on Thursday, will be in force in principle until January 31, 2023, according to the AdnKronos agency.
The European Commission has convened the Health Security Committee so that the health ministries of the 27 adopt a «coordinated» response, something that Meloni explicitly called for in his end-of-year appearance before the media.
In relation to other possible measures, the Italian leader has opted for focusing any initiative on tests or masks, as well as calling for «citizen responsibility». Meloni questioned the effectiveness of restricting mobility, for example by means of confinements.
