Sudanese authorities have stressed that they are working to end the «chaos» in South Darfur state, which has been rocked by an upsurge in inter-communal clashes in recent weeks that have left dozens dead.
The vice-president of the Sovereign Transitional Council and head of the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has promised that the «criminals» responsible for these events will be arrested and tried, as reported by the Sudanese state news agency, SUNA.
He also unveiled the formation of an investigation committee headed by the attorney general to achieve a «transparent» investigation that «clearly» determines the facts, «without paying attention to the agenda of those who seek to destabilize Sudan through the negative use of social networks».
Dagalo, popularly known as ‘Hemedti’, has stressed that the authorities will work to ensure that the displaced can return to their homes and has advanced that they will receive compensation, in addition to the return of goods or livestock stolen during the assaults.
On the other hand, he confirmed that the RSF – accused of abuses in the framework of the conflict in Dafur and the repression of the pro-democracy protests – have been deployed in the area to try to contain the clashes and restore calm.
The Darfur region has been the scene of an upsurge in inter-communal tensions despite a landmark October 2020 peace deal with several rebel groups, which seeks to end fighting that erupted in 2003, leaving at least 300,000 dead and more than 2.5 million displaced.
Former President Omar Hassan al-Bashir — overthrown in a coup d’état in April 2019 — as well as other senior officials during his tenure, are wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the context of this conflict.
