British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood died on Thursday at the age of 81 at her home in Clapham, south of the UK capital, London, her representatives said in a statement on her official Twitter profile.
Her husband and creative partner, Andreas Kronthaler, said Westwood would live on in his heart. «We have been working until the end and she has given me so much to go on with,» the BBC reported.
Westwood rose to fame in the 1970s with her androgynous punk and new wave designs. She ran a boutique on London’s famous King’s Road with Sex Pistols producer Malcolm McLaren.
The Tintwistle-born designer was also known for campaigning to raise awareness of climate change and for supporting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. She even staged a protest event in which she suspended herself from a cage in July 2020.
Westwood’s flamboyant designs have dressed celebrities and VIPs around the world. Model Dita Von Teese wore an iconic purple dress by the British designer when she married Marilyn Manson in 2005.
