Unionized nurses in New York City who work in the private sector will begin a ten-day strike on January 9 to demand improved working conditions. One of the main demands is specific ratios of professional-patient care.
Approximately 10,000 unionized nurses have voted in favor of the strike with almost 99 percent support, and several sector organizations have already sent out the mandatory ten-day notice for the strike. Public sector nurses are ‘de facto’ prohibited from striking.
«We have delivered the strike notice within 10 days to the management. Our strike begins on January 9 at 6.00 a.m. unless the employers present serious and reasonable proposals to reach an agreement,» explained the unions on December 30, as reported in the local press on Monday.
The president of the president of the New York Nurses Association, Nancy Hagans, has reproached the lack of personnel or means. «Nurses have been through hell. We have risked our lives to save patients during the COVID-19 pandemic sometimes without the protective gear we needed to be safe and too often understaffed for safe patient care,» she said.
