U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Tom Menger admitted Monday the possibility of a new assault as occurred on January 6, 2021, despite highlighting the measures implemented to improve the response to an incident of this caliber.
«As we approach the second anniversary of one of the darkest days in our nation’s history, we must answer this critical question: ‘Could January 6 happen again?'» the Capitol Police chief said.
«With the polarized state of our nation, an attack like the one our Department suffered could be attempted again,» acknowledged the police officer, who added that «if the unthinkable happens,» the authorities will be «ready.»
Menger said that the USPD has «been working day and night to implement more than 100 significant improvements,» thanks to the support of Congress.
Thus, he explained that the current situation is «clearly better than before the January 6 attack», while he stressed that «there is still work to be done».
«The current climate of threats, particularly against elected officials, will require continued and heightened vigilance. We will do everything we can to fulfill our mission to protect members of Congress, the Capitol complex and the legislative process,» he concluded.
The Chief of Police has detailed the measures taken, among which the incorporation of a new Director of Intelligence or the capacity of the Civil Disturbance Unit. Congress approved legislation to allow the head of the USCP to declare a state of emergency and to have the participation of the National Guard.
Also, detailed incident action plans will now be required to be prepared that set forth the responsibilities of officers participating in demonstrations and events.
