Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on congressional Republicans to back Kevin McCarthy as the new speaker of the House of Representatives, following three failed votes that evidenced internal division within the now-majority party.
«Don’t turn a great triumph into a giant, embarrassing defeat. It is time to celebrate. You deserve it,» Trump posted on his Truth Social network account, after having held «conversations» during the last hours about this controversy.
The former president is confident that McCarthy will do a «good job» once elected to the third highest political post in the hierarchy of the United States, although it is precisely some Trump supporters who have complicated something that, under normal circumstances, would have been a formality.
Thursday’s message contrasts with Trump’s previous ambiguity, who in statements to NBC News chose to remain silent when the chaos in the Lower House was already more than evident. «Everyone is calling me because they want my support, but we’ll see what happens,» he told the television network.
The official candidate, who aspired to assert the new Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, has already failed in three votes due to the discomfort of a more radical sector agglutinated in the Freedom Caucus.
A score of Republicans supported an alternative candidate, Jim Jordan, leaving McCarthy with 202 votes, ten votes behind even Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. It takes 218 votes to be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives.
