A Mexican judge on Friday remanded Ovidio Guzmán López, alias ‘El Ratón’ and son of the notorious drug trafficker ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, in custody following his arrest on Thursday in Culiacán by Mexican security forces in an operation that left nearly 30 people dead.
In a court hearing held this Friday, Judge Gregorio Salazar Hernández decided to issue the precautionary measure with a view to his possible extradition to the United States, where he is accused of trafficking drugs such as fentanyl, marijuana and cocaine, among others.
Ovidio Guzmán’s legal team, however, has limited itself to requesting that he have access to medical treatment, according to the newspaper ‘El Universal’. El Ratón, who according to the government is the leader of the Los Menores faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, was arrested by Mexican forces on Thursday along with 21 other people.
During the operation, security forces seized an arsenal of four Barrett sniper rifles and six machine guns, 26 weapons and 13 vehicles, magazines, cartridges and tactical equipment.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has defended the independence of Mexican security forces in carrying out the operation and ruled out US intervention.
