Residents of the town of Jesús María, in the Mexican state of Culiacán, have applauded and cheered the withdrawal of the military troops who arrested the drug lord Ovidio Guzmán López, ‘El Ratón’, son of the historic drug trafficker ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, last Thursday.
The soldiers in charge of the arrest held their positions for more than 35 hours and then left the upper part of the syndicate on foot, under the watchful eye of the residents of the ranches in the area, who had been confined to the region and without electricity supply or communications, reports Mexican newspaper ‘El Universal’.
The military have also removed the blockade set up on federal highway number 15 after Ovidio Guzmán was airlifted to Mexico City.
The neighbors had denounced the passivity of the president of the State Human Rights Commission, José Carlos Álvarez Ortega, in view of the lack of electricity supply and the confinement of the inhabitants.
The operation in which the son of ‘Chapo’ was arrested resulted in the early hours of Thursday morning with almost 30 dead. On Friday, Judge Gregorio Salazar Hernández ordered the drug trafficker’s provisional detention with a view to his possible extradition to the United States, where he is accused of trafficking drugs such as fentanyl, marijuana and cocaine, among others.
During the operation, security forces seized an arsenal of four Barrett .50 caliber sniper rifles and six machine guns, 26 weapons and 13 vehicles, magazines, cartridges and tactical equipment.
