The United States team has won the first edition of the United Cup, a mixed tennis competition between countries, against Italy after Taylor Fritz won the final point in a tight match against Matteo Berrettini (7-6(4), 7-6(6)) on Sunday.
Previously, Jessica Pegula’s victory over Martina Trevisan (6-4, 6-2) and Frances Tiafoe’s win over Lorenzo Musetti, after the Italian withdrew due to injury after a 6-2 deficit, had given the American team a comfortable lead.
Despite the fact that Fritz missed up to nine chances to break, he used his coolness in the tiebreakers to take the victory after two hours and 16 minutes of play.
In this way, the United States completes an overwhelming participation in the first edition of the tournament, giving up only two singles matches in the whole week. All their ties were decided with at least a 4-1 lead.
