The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on Monday denounced the use of the national team’s jersey by some of the Brazilians who on Sunday stormed institutions in the capital, Brasilia.
The highest Brazilian soccer body has released a statement in which it has stressed that the ‘canarinha’ shirt is «symbol of joy» of the country and that at all times should be used to «encourage, vibrate, love the homeland».
«The CBF is a non-partisan and democratic entity and encourages that the jersey be used to unite and not to separate Brazilians. The entity vehemently repudiates that our jersey be used in anti-democratic acts and vandalism,» the organization concluded.
Hundreds of supporters of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the seat of state powers on Sunday, raising tensions to the highest level in the first days of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s mandate, against whom they are calling for a coup d’état.
The jersey of the national soccer team has become in recent years one of the main emblems used by Bolsonaro’s supporters. In fact, Lula himself encouraged during the election campaign and before the World Cup in Qatar to wear the ‘canarinha’ to all Brazilians regardless of their ideology.
