The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, on Monday described as an «attack on the heart of Brazilian democracy» the violence experienced on Sunday after thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s main institutions.
In this way, he has described as «shocking» the images of thousands of people entering the headquarters of the National Congress, the Planalto Palace and the Supreme Court in Brasilia after several months of mobilizations and violent protests due to their discontent with the triumph at the polls of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
«Sunday’s violence was the culmination of the sustained misrepresentation of the facts, as well as the incitement to violence and hatred by political, social and economic actors who have been feeding an atmosphere of mistrust, division and destruction by rejecting the result of democratic elections,» he said in a statement.
In this sense, Turk expressed that «unfounded accusations of electoral fraud undermine the right to political participation», and urged to stop «disinformation and manipulation» in the Latin American country.
«I urge leaders from across Brazil’s political spectrum to cooperate with each other to work to restore confidence in democratic institutions and promote dialogue and public participation,» he stressed, also calling on the authorities to conduct a «prompt, impartial, effective and transparent» investigation into Sunday’s violent events.
Following the entry of supporters into the country’s main democratic institutions, Lula has decreed the federal intervention of Brasilia to assume security powers. In a joint communiqué, the three state powers assaulted have stressed their «unity» to face this type of attacks which they have described as «terrorism» and «coup».
