Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes promised Tuesday to punish all those responsible for the assault on state institutions last Sunday in Brasilia, both those who participated directly and those who did so by omission or through financing.
«The institutions will punish all those responsible. Those who carried out the acts, those who financed them, those who encouraged them, by action or by omission,» he stressed during the inauguration of the new director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues.
«We have to firmly fight the anti-democrats, the coup plotters and those who want a regime of exception», emphasized De Moraes, historical target of bolsonarismo attacks, who has seen his figure reinforced after the political crisis by leading some of the first punitive measures.
Shortly after the attacks on the headquarters of the three branches of the Brazilian State, the magistrate ordered the temporary dismissal of the governor of Brasilia, Ibaneis Rocha, as well as of the Secretary of Security, Anderson Torres, for «omission» of their functions and «connivance» with the assailants.
At the same time, on Monday he ordered the dismantling of the camps that had been set up all over the country in front of the Army barracks to demand a coup d’état, decreeing imprisonment for all those who refused to leave, in addition to the nearly 1,500 who had already been arrested.
For his part, the new police chief has promised that they will act «firmly» against those who took part in Sunday’s riots and has regretted that «the words of hatred» that were spread for weeks ended up materializing «in tangible actions that threatened the democratic state».
