The Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved on Wednesday a bill to launch a new constituent process following the Chilean population’s rejection of a new Constitution in the referendum held on September 4.

Specifically, by 109 votes in favor, 37 against and two abstentions, the Chamber has given the ‘green light’ to a constitutional reform initiative that gives shape to the procedure for the elaboration of a new Constitution.

«We have had a procedure within the agreed time (…) We have honored the word and we can be happy for Chilean democracy», the president of the Chamber, Vlado Mirosevic, has indicated in declarations to the press, as reported by the newspaper ‘La Tercera’.

The proposal must now be promulgated by the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric. After that, a Constitutional Council will be formed with 50 people who will have to be elected by the citizens and who will be in charge of drafting the new Constitution.

In addition, the bill includes the creation of a commission formed by 24 experts – twelve of them elected by the Chamber of Deputies and twelve by the Senate – whose duty will be to propose a constitutional draft to the Council, as explained by channel T13.

The new measure contemplates that next May 7 elections for the Constitutional Council will be held, while on December 17 a direct popular consultation will be held to approve or reject the constitutional proposal.
