Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry on Wednesday sent a note of protest to Canada over sanctions imposed against two former Sri Lankan presidents.
«Sri Lanka has expressed its displeasure over the imposition of sanctions against experts Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa,» he said in a statement carried by the NewsWire news portal.
He said that during a meeting with the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Eric Walsh, Sabry condemned the Canadian government’s measure and warned that the country «is going through a critical situation».
«The sanctions have been imposed as the country is making efforts to resolve emerging problems and achieve reconciliation», he said before affirming that it could «polarize the population».
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced Tuesday the imposition of sanctions against four senior Sri Lankan officials, including the two former presidents, in retaliation for the «violation of human rights during the civil war between 1983 and 2009».
