The deputies of the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly approved on Wednesday night the tenth extension of the emergency regime, decreed on March 27, 2022, which will be in effect for 30 more days.
Once again, the measure was approved with the votes in favor of 67 legislators, while there were six votes against and ten abstentions.
The president of the Assembly, Ernesto Castro, assured that he voted in favor of the measure «for true peace», insisting that he will do so «as many times as necessary, until (the country) is free from the cancer of gangs».
«Once again I raise my hand for security. To bring tranquility to our communities. So that our children and young people can go out on the streets without fear,» he added.
Unlike previous extensions to the exception regime, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Gustavo Villatoro, has not provided an update on the number of detainees, as reported by the newspaper ‘La Prensa Grafica’.
This regime, under which El Salvador’s authorities have detained tens of thousands of citizens for alleged gang links, has been criticized by human rights organizations and international bodies.
