A group of deputies from the Veneto region, northern Italy, have asked the mayor of the town of Anguillara, Alessandra Buono, to withdraw the honorary citizenship of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro, whose great-grandfather was a native of this region, after Sunday’s assault on institutions.
«After the attempted coup in Brazil by supporters of the former president we can only ratify the absurdity of this recognition that we ask to be revoked urgently,» expressed the regional deputies of the Democratic Party (PD) Vanessa Camani and Andrea Zanoni, to the newspaper ‘Podova Oggi’.
Along with the PD, other formations with parliamentary representation in the region, such as the 5 Star Movement (M5S), the Greens and the Communist Refoundation Party, have joined in calling on the mayor of Anguillara, of the far-right Northern League party, to revoke the distinction given in November 2021.
«We are facing very serious facts. The attack of democratic institutions by Bolsonaro’s followers is an attack against democracy and cannot be tolerated in any way», have emphasized the M5S regional councilor Erika Baldin, who has called for a resolution of support for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Since the assault on the headquarters of the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court on Sunday, Bolsonaro’s Italian origins have come up in the political debate in the European country, so much so that the Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, had to deny that his citizenship was being processed «He did not ask for it and I do not believe he can have it», Tajani said after the opposition has been questioning the government in this regard after it became known that in November, a few days after Lula’s victory in the elections, two of his sons, Flávio and Eduardo, requested at the Italian Embassy in Brasilia the opening of a process to obtain citizenship.
