The Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office announced Wednesday a new death in Cuzco in the context of clashes with security forces during the protests that are taking place in the country to demand the ouster of President Dina Boluarte, early elections and the closure of Congress.
Remo Candia Guevara, the president of the peasant community of Anansaya Urinsaya Ccollana de Anta, located in Cuzco, in the southeast of the country, was the person who lost his life, as detailed by the Ombudsman’s Office.
«We regret that clashes in Cuzco have caused the death of the president of the community of Anansaya Urinsaya Ccollana de Anta, Remo Candia Guevara. We ask the director of the Lorena Hospital to communicate with the prosecutor on duty to perform the necropsy,» said the agency in a statement.
«We demand an immediate investigation to find those responsible for the death and proceed to the respective sanction. Our commissioners are on alert in areas of mobilization in regions of the country,» added the Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office.
For its part, the Regional Health Management (GERESA) of Cuzco added that at least 34 people were injured in the clashes, which took place on 28 de Julio Avenue, in the center of the city, when the demonstrators were advancing towards the Velasco Astete International Airport.
In fact, the intention of the demonstrators to break into the airfield has been questioned by the Prosecutor of Crime Prevention of Cuzco, Eduardo Paulette, who has advocated that the marches should always be carried out respecting the rights and freedoms of the rest of the citizens.
«We told them (the leaders of the mobilizations) that they can protest throughout the city of Cuzco and we will accompany them with all the responsibility of the case, but I do not understand why their belligerent intention of wanting to enter the Airport», said the prosecutor Paulette.
With this new death, there are now at least 46 people dead since the outbreak of the mobilizations for the dismissal of President Pedro Castillo, who was removed by the Congress after trying to arrogate to himself more powers with a view to forming a government of exception.
