The Internal Affairs service of the Brasilia Military Police has initiated an investigation against the dismissed commander of the Operations Department, Jorge Eduardo Naime, due to suspicions that he had intentionally delayed the operation against the assailants of the headquarters of the three branches of power.
Naime, who was removed from his post after last Sunday’s violent episodes in the Esplanade of the Ministries, would have delayed the intervention of the agents to facilitate the escape of the followers of Jair Bolsonaro who stormed the headquarters of the Congress, the Presidency and the Supreme Court.
The complaint against Naime claims that he led the men in his charge too slowly, even stopping on several occasions, according to the news portal Metropoles.
The work of law enforcement during Sunday’s assault on institutions has been widely questioned and has raised the suspicions of the new government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who spoke Thursday of «complicity» within the Army and the Military Police.
As the days go by, more videos of what happened are coming to light. One of the last ones, published by the portal G1, shows how soldiers of the Brazilian Army hinder the work of the Military Police when they tried to arrest several of the assailants who attacked the Planalto Palace.
However, the Army has rejected the alleged connivance of its troops with the assailants and stressed that these images are «out of context», since «the situation was under control» and «the demonstrators were under custody».
