The Government of Peru has signed this Friday the supreme decree by which the present 2023 is declared as the «year of unity, peace and development», a phrase that will be included in official documents until December.
Since the early 1960s, Peruvian authorities have officially given each year a name, usually a phrase relating to current events. 2020 was the «year of the universalization of health», while 2022 was the «strengthening of national sovereignty».
The decree, signed by the President, Dina Boluarte, and the Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, states that, taking into account that «the State promotes transparent dialogue at all levels of government (…) it is necessary to declare 2023 as the year of unity, peace and development.»
The official name given to 2023 has aroused some controversy among some opposition sectors, which recall that, since the arrival of Boluarte as Head of State after the dismissal and arrest of Pedro Castillo, 48 people have already died in the framework of the anti-government protests shaking the country.
