Ecuadorian authorities have reported that they have regained control of the El Inca prison after violent clashes between inmates on Friday in which one of the inmates died.
«Unfortunately, the confrontation between inmates left one person dead, identified as César V.,» reported the National Service of Integral Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI).
The agency stresses that «there was no riot in this CPPL, but it was a fight between inmates who provoked incidents» in the Penitentiary Center of Pichincha Male No. 1, better known as El Inca Prison.
A total of 110 members of the Special Operations Group GOE, of the Order Maintenance Unit – UMO, and officers of the Penitentiary Security and Surveillance Corps broke into the penitentiary center in «forceful actions» that «allowed the total and immediate control of the center».
Military personnel are deployed outside the prison to guarantee security, according to the Ecuadorian newspaper ‘El Telegrafo’.
On November 18, ten inmates died in riots in the same prison. The riots were related to the transfer of a maximum security inmate to La Roca Prison in Guayaquil. In addition, on December 1, 2022, the director of the center, Santiago Loza, was murdered, assaulted by alleged hired assassins.
