The prime minister of the semi-autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, Masrur Barzani, announced Sunday a series of preliminary agreements with the Iraqi government to resolve a number of outstanding issues, including frictions over the sharing of the oil business.
Tension between the Iraqi central government and the Kurdistan authorities flared up in February last year when Iraq’s Supreme Court declared «unconstitutional» the law in force until now that guaranteed Kurdish autonomy over their oilfields.
Since then, the Kurdistan Regional Government has appealed the court’s ruling at every opportunity.
Barzani informed his Council of Ministers on Sunday of the success of his visit to Baghdad last Wednesday, during which he also discussed the question of the quota reserved for the Kurds in the country’s federal budgets.
Shortly after taking office in October last year, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Al Sudani reiterated his commitment to strengthening relations between Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan through a new framework of constitutional collaboration to «resolve long-pending disputes».
