The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has denounced the «ethnocide» of sexual abuse of minors in indigenous communities in the Guaviare region.
«Unfortunately it is not a clandestine activity, done against the same family and community (…). Levels of complicity have been reached by the community itself, which sees no other way than to prostitute their own children. This is called ethnocide», Petro stated during an event in Jericho, Antioquia, reported by the Colombian radio station Radio Nacional.
Petro highlighted the systematic nature of these abuses and warned that it is putting an end to the culture of the Nukak Maku, one of the last ancestral peoples of the Colombian Amazon.
The president has ordered the creation of a commission of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF) to respond to complaints of child abuse.
«This horror has been stimulated by impunity for years. All investigations will be initiated, even for the omission of officials,» Petro assured.
