Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic held a meeting on Sunday with Russian Ambassador Aleksandar Bocan-Harchenko on the crisis in Kosovo, a week after NATO rejected Belgrade’s request to deploy the Serbian Army and Police to, according to Serbian authorities, protect the civilian population from the persecution to which it is being subjected by the Kosovar authorities.
«President Vucic informed Ambassador Bocan-Harcenko about the intensification of international diplomatic activities regarding the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina,» the Information Service of the President of the Republic has announced.
For his part, the ambassador confirmed that the Russian Federation «remains constant in its support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia,» according to the note carried by the Serbian public broadcaster RTS.
The Serbian government submitted the request last December 15, during the height of the crisis between Pristina and Belgrade, at a time when the Kosovo Serb population had risen up in barricades to protest against arrests of members of this community.
The barricades were eventually removed last week in a respite from bilateral tensions, which however flared up again on Friday last week after an individual shot and wounded two young Kosovo Serb men in southern Kosovo. The incident, authorities have confirmed, reportedly involved a Kosovar security officer.
