Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger has warned that there is still a «very high threat» to U.S. Congressmen despite a decrease in the number of cases and investigations into possible attacks on the U.S. Congress.
«The threats against members of Congress, which remain very high, have led to an expansion of not only our investigative capabilities but our protective capabilities. As we do that work, the important thing is for everyone to reduce the use of violent rhetoric so that everyone is safe,» he said.
His remarks come just months after the husband of now former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suffered an attack at his home that was initially aimed at her. In addition, this month marked the second anniversary of the assault on the Capitol that took place on January 6, 2021 by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
The Capitol Police Threat Oversight Group investigated more than 7,000 cases of possible attacks throughout 2022, down from 9,625 recorded in 2021 and 8,613 in 2020. However, experts have pointed out that in recent years there has been an increase in these cases, especially due to the use of social networks.
In the weeks prior to the assault on the Capitol, numerous messages were recorded that set off alarms about possible attacks against congressmen, according to information from the CNN television network.
Thus, in a report by the Capitol Police it can be seen that all members of Congress have received threats, which are similarly distributed between Democratic and Republican members.
