German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has promised that his government will continue to support Ukraine «as long as necessary» and has confirmed that it will continue to charter arms, although he has left up in the air the possibility of sending the Leopard 2 tanks publicly demanded by Kiev.
«We will continue to supply Ukraine with large quantities of weapons, in consultation with our allies,» Scholz said during the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland), in an appearance in which he alluded to artillery, anti-aircraft defense systems and armored vehicles.
The military aid, he added, has been «a major turning point» in the security and diplomatic policy of Germany, a country which Ukraine has even reproached for being a step behind other Western partners in terms of arms deliveries.
Scholz, expressly questioned about the possible shipment of Leopard 2, has defended that Berlin is among those who «do more», without expressly clarifying whether or not he is in favor of supplying these tanks, as other European governments have done.
