The European Parliament has condemned «in the strongest terms» the assault on institutions in Brazil, expressing solidarity with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and pointing to the role of former President Jair Bolsonaro in the attack.

In a resolution approved with 319 votes in favor, 46 against and 74 abstentions, the MEPs condemn «in the strongest terms» the criminal acts of the former president’s supporters against the seat of the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court and call for the acceptance of Lula’s electoral victory.

The resolution applauds the Supreme Court’s decision to authorize an investigation of Bolsonaro, since «he may have contributed, in a very relevant way, to the commission of crimes and terrorist acts». And it links this event with others such as the assault on the Capitol in Washington or the coup plans in Germany, which it attributes to the rise of transnational fascism, racism and extremism.

Thus, he supports ongoing efforts to ensure a prompt, impartial, serious and effective investigation to hold accountable those involved in the assault, including its instigators and financiers. It also underscores the responsibility of state institutions that failed to act to prevent the attacks.

Finally, the European Parliament has words of solidarity with Lula, of whom it stresses that he is the democratically elected president and shows its support for his government and the Brazilian democratic institutions.
