The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador has appealed to participants in the protests in the country to respect the work of health personnel, alluding that the wounded and sick cannot be abandoned.
«With great concern for the situation of social protest in Peru, we remind the general population that there are duties and rights of health personnel that must be respected and protected,» the organization said in a statement on the social network Twitter.
According to the ICRC, health personnel have the duty to provide humane, dignified, impartial and non-discriminatory treatment to the wounded and sick, ensuring that health care is compatible with human rights and professional ethics.
It has also affirmed that health personnel have the right to dignity, moral, psychological and physical integrity. He also stressed the importance that they should not be victims of violence and that they should have freedom of movement to access places where their presence is necessary for the care of the wounded and sick.
«Health facilities and medical transport must be respected and protected. They must not be attacked or damaged at any time,» the ICRC stressed in its letter.
The organization’s reminder comes on the day of a large protest in the Peruvian capital, Lima, for which 11,000 police officers have been mobilized to maintain security at the demonstration.
The protests began last December 7, when former president Pedro Castillo was deposed by the Peruvian Congress, after the former president announced his intention to dissolve the Andean Parliament and establish a government of exception.
In these social demands, the Executive of the current Peruvian President, Dina Bolaurte, is asked to resign. They also call for the urgent calling of presidential elections and the dissolution of Congress.
