The general director of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, requested the imprisonment of Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice and Secretary of Security of the Federal District of Brasília during the seizure of the headquarters of Congress, the Presidential Palace and the Federal Supreme Court by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, alleging the crime of omission of duty.
Rodrigues bases his request on a report by the intelligence services of the Federal Police that points to a possible crime of omission on the part of the local authorities despite the «information that warned of the upcoming events» for days.
The petition includes imprisonment for Torres and also for the commander of the Military Police of the Federal District, Fábio Augusto Vieira, for his attitude in the face of the «extensive levels of violence which caused serious damage to public property and institutions».
«All thanks to the omission of the Public Security system of the Federal District and in particular of the Secretary of State for Public Security of the D.F. and the Command of the Military Police of the D.F., which did not adopt the necessary measures to contain the criminals,» states the document signed by Rodrigues.
A day before the Bolsonarista assault, the Federal Police had informed the Ministry of Justice and the D.F. authorities of the demonstrators’ intention to enter the official headquarters, according to the document revealed by the newspaper ‘O Globo’.
Torres’ defense lawyer, Rodrigo Roca, has criticized the «revanchism» of the authorities and has stated that the omission «is not even something that can be considered in this specific case».
The text of the Federal Police highlights that «the records of the images show the Military Police of the Federal District escorting the demonstrators in the direction of the dome of the three Powers». The last barrier preventing access to the Three Powers Square was also formed by conventional military police and not by civilian riot police, so it was «easily» overcome by the demonstrators.
The report also includes messages extracted from messaging app groups related to the convocation. «Everything paid for: water, coffee, lunch, food, roof, toilets. It will all be at the encampment. Please help us get patriots,» one of the messages read.
The prison order by Judge Alexandre de Moraes is based on the police request and assures that there is «a possible criminal organization that has as one of its purposes to destabilize the republican institutions».
On the other hand, the Police have arrested an individual in Boa Vista, Roraima, for a crime of incitement to violence against the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The suspect posted a note about Lula’s visit to Roraima this Saturday that «it would be time to put a bullet in his head.» The Federal Police will put at the disposal of Justice the detainee, arrested on Friday night.
Lula visits Roraima this Saturday to offer his support to the Yanomami Indians affected by a health crisis and cases of malnutrition. The Ministry of Health decreed a state of emergency. Nearly 570 indigenous people have died in the last four years from treatable diseases and mercury contamination.
