The rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Enrique Graue, has announced that he is studying possible «punitive actions» against Supreme Court Justice Yasmín Esquivel for plagiarizing her undergraduate thesis.
Graue acknowledged Friday that the case calls into question the prestige of the institution, recognized as the most important university in Mexico, but stressed that they will not act hastily to external pressures to «make summary judgments».
«With determination and freedom, and always respecting the rules that govern us, we are simultaneously studying the different alternatives and the consequences that could occur as a result of additional sanctioning actions,» he explained.
Graue has indicated that, once the due process has concluded, the Honor Commission of the University Council will be convened to analyze, as a whole, the various options and actions that may eventually be carried out.
«With the strength of legality and the full autonomy we exercise, substantial elements of our identity, rest assured that UNAM will overcome this and any other challenge we face, defending and consolidating the values that distinguish us,» he has stressed.
However, he acknowledged that after consulting with the Office of the General Counsel, as well as with the directors of the Law School and the Institute of Legal Research, UNAM does not have the authority to withdraw or annul the judge’s professional title.
«I am very clear that none of the above redeems the indignation we feel in the face of a case that, like the one we are dealing with, could go unpunished and only with professional and social discredit,» he reiterated.
Thus, for example, actions are being analyzed «to correct the legal loopholes and avoid similar cases in the future» and «specialized technology» will be used to «analyze» all the theses of the UNAM.
