The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, concluded her visit to Algeria by praising the «strategic importance» of a country in which she continues to see a «reliable partner», key in issues such as energy, in a sign of political harmony that the local authorities also wanted to make clear.
The Algerian President, Abdelmayid Tebune, underlined that Italy and Algeria are «two friendly countries», as Meloni’s visit, «of particular importance», would demonstrate. The Prime Minister has chosen the North African country to make her debut in the region, 20 years after the signing of the friendship treaty outlining bilateral relations.
«Algeria is the first Italian partner in Africa», Meloni defended, in an appearance before the media in which she recalled the recent signing of agreements to enhance the exploitation and purchase of gas. He also bet on continuing to strengthen ties in other areas, such as politics and culture, with the general objective of «building bridges».
The head of the Italian government and the Algerian president signed a joint declaration which, according to Meloni, demonstrates the «excellent» relations between the two countries, reports the public television channel Rai.
Italy also aspires to involve Algeria on other fronts, for example in collaborating to stabilize hotspots of tension such as Libya and Mali. Meloni acknowledged that he is «concerned» about the «instability» in these areas and took the opportunity to defend the two-state solution for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
