Peru’s Prime Minister Alberto Otarola persuaded President Dina Boluarte not to resign after the first deaths during protests in favor of former President Pedro Castillo in December 2022, according to the newspaper ‘La Republica’.
Otárola would have convinced Boluarte not to resign with the argument that she would be prosecuted for the deaths of these people if she did so and that they would gain the support of both the right-wing congressional bench and the Armed Forces if she remained in office.
Boluarte’s resignation is one of the demands of the thousands of people who since December last year have been demonstrating throughout the country over Castillo’s detention and demanding early elections. Since then more than thirty people have died during the repression of the demonstrations.
In spite of everything, Boluarte has recently re-emphasized that he will remain in office until new elections are held, scheduled for 2024. «The government is firm and its cabinet more united than ever,» he said last week.
