The Congress of the Republic of Peru has approved this Thursday a motion by which it has declared ‘persona non grata’ the former president of Bolivia Evo Morales, protagonist of recent controversies with the Andean authorities.
The motion — approved by 74 votes in favor, 40 against and four abstentions — proposed to declare the former Bolivian president ‘persona non grata’ «for his constant incitements in national politics».
Earlier this month, the Peruvian government already banned nine Bolivian citizens, among them Morales himself, from entering the country on the grounds that they had engaged in activities «of a proselytizing nature», apparently after they had interceded in favor of the deposed Pedro Castillo.
The Peruvian Executive then questioned the activities of Bolivian citizens in the country, in «clear affectation» to security and order. Lima stressed, however, the «historical ties» that unite the country with other nations in the region.
Morales has defended Castillo, removed by Congress on December 7 after he attempted to increase his powers with a government of exception. He also questioned the role of the current government, headed by Dina Boluarte, in the repression of the demonstrations.
