The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has announced that security will be reinforced at all diplomatic missions abroad following incidents in Athens, Barcelona and Berlin.
«I will inform the Council of Ministers on the measures taken by the Chancellery to guarantee the security of all our diplomatic seats, of all our diplomats and to guarantee the security of the Chancellery itself,» Tajani said in statements to the press from Florence reported by the AdnKronos news agency.
«We have asked the Carabinieri of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to reinforce the security of our diplomatic and consular offices around the world, especially where the greatest risks are feared», he added.
Tajani acknowledged that he is «concerned» about these «attacks», «but that does not mean that the government is willing to deal with those who use violence (…). Violence cannot be used against the institutions and the forces of law and order», he reiterated.
The Italian Consulate in Barcelona was attacked on Saturday and a window of the building was broken. In addition, a graffiti was painted in favor of the anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito, who has been on hunger strike for three months.
Last December 2, the vehicle of the first counselor of the Italian Embassy in Athens, Susanna Schlein, was set on fire, and later another diplomatic vehicle was set on fire in Berlin.
